Summary

Netflix's Inventing Anna and Hulu's The Dropout meets Catch Me If You Can, a captivating novel about an ambitious young woman who gets trapped in a charismatic con artist's scam。

After a rough year at NYU, aspiring writer Lora Ricci is thrilled to land a summer internship at ELLE magazine where she meets Cat Wolff, contributing editor and enigmatic daughter of a clean-energy mogul。 Cat takes Lora under her wing, soliciting her help with side projects and encouraging her writing。

As a friendship emerges between the two women, Lora opens up to Cat about her desperate struggles and lost scholarship。 Cat's solution: Drop out of NYU and become her ghostwriter。 Lora agrees and, when the internship ends, she moves into Cat's suite at the opulent Plaza Hotel。 Writing during the day and accompanying Cat to extravagant parties at night, Lora's life quickly shifts from looming nightmare to dream-come-true。 But as Lora is drawn into Cat's glamorous lifestyle, Cat's perfect exterior cracks, exposing an illicit, shady world。

A whip-smart and delightfully inventive writer, Susan Rigetti brilliantly pieces together a perceptive, humorous caper full of sharp observations about scam culture。 Composed of diary entries, emails, FBI correspondence, and more, Cover Story is a fresh, fun, and wholly original novel that takes readers deep into the codependency and deceit found in a relationship built on power imbalance and lies。

I literally have no words to describe how absolutely AMAZING this book is。 It was soooooo hard to put down and the storyline was most thrilling with so many unexpected twists and turns (especially at the end)。 All I really have to say is that this is an absolute must read for anyone!!

3。5。 Though I had to settle for my backyard instead of a beach or a pool, I still had sunshine and some booze, and that really is the only way to read this book。 It's the ultimate beach read, and I mean that as a compliment: compulsively readable (I chewed through this in under 24 hrs), fun, and very familiar。 I'll hand it to Rigetti: she very effectively synthesized multiple elements of the zeitgeist (Anna Delvey! Took me a little while to get into this book as it’s told in an epistolary style。 All of the story is mostly told through Cat’s diary entries with some email, social media, and text messages included。 Very reminiscent of the Anna Delvey story with some added twists。 The last twist took me completely by surprise。

I was intending to rate this four stars, but the ENDING。 Wow。 That’s all I’ll say。

It's hard to write much about this plot without giving things away, but Lora is a summer intern at Elle Magazine who befriends Cat, a contributing writer and daughter of a Russian mogul。 Cat lives in a suite at the Plaza, and when Lora loses her scholarship and is afraid to tell her parents, she moves in with Cat and becomes her ghostwriter for a new novel they both have high hopes for。 The narrative is told through Lora's prolific diary entries, interspersed with text messages, emails, and even It's hard to write much about this plot without giving things away, but Lora is a summer intern at Elle Magazine who befriends Cat, a contributing writer and daughter of a Russian mogul。 Cat lives in a suite at the Plaza, and when Lora loses her scholarship and is afraid to tell her parents, she moves in with Cat and becomes her ghostwriter for a new novel they both have high hopes for。 The narrative is told through Lora's prolific diary entries, interspersed with text messages, emails, and even text correspondence, and at first, I found the style a little confusing, but I quickly settled in。。。 and then I couldn't put this down, finishing this in one night! I haven't seen Inventing Anna, but this is clearly a play on that, and the many twists work well。 I absolutely loved this smart novel and highly recommend it。 。。。more

Fine。 Fun and fast paced enough but fairly superficial。 Doesnt go above current Anna Delvey headlines enough to really say anything。 Its just froth with a twist。 Fun, but no depth

The twist was not surprising

This was good。

This book is the equivalent of an Alias episode or a Jason Bourne movie。 Sheer entertainment。 Sometimes that’s exactly what you need。 Plus, it’s an interesting format (diary entries, emails, IG posts)。 The perfect summer read!

I absolutely DEVOURED this book。 Why? I have no clue。 It reminded me so much of Inventing Anna, and I thought I’d be turned off by the similarities。I loved how this book tied in Anna Delvey’s lies and plots with the world of publishing。 You were constantly wondering what would happen next。 I thought I knew what would happen。 I was WRONG。 That ending though? AMAZINGTo be honest, though, if you’re looking for a con artist story, just watch Inventing Anna。

A fun read, but I think it suffered a little through no fault of its own by releasing so close to the Inventing Anna series - there was lots in here clearly inspired by Anna Delvey and it came off as unoriginal because of that。 Still an entertaining read。

This book felt like someone put the dropout and the anna delvey story in an AI machine and plopped out a full novel。 It was predictable, the characters had no personalities, every aspect—from the emails to the conversations to the FBI operation—were thin and absurdly unrealistic。 This feels like it was hastily written solely to ride the conwoman trend coattails。 As Ms。 Delvey herself Would say, YOU’RE BASIC。

Robyn

I love a scammer story and this was so fun to read, I knocked it out in one sitting。 Definitely recommend for your next beach or flight or sunny day off。

What。 The Heck。 The ending GOT ME !!!!I was mildly entertained the whole book bc it feels like i’m reading “Inventing Anna” instead of watching it。 But… The ending。 Wtf

A fun thrill! I was swindled for sure。 I speed read it a second time to find all the clues were dropped and there was a great peppering of them throughout。

I enjoyed this book and could not figure out Cat or Lara。 This was going to be a 3 start but the ending bumped it up。

What a fun read! I started it a few days ago but tonight finished 2/3 of it without really putting it down。 Scamming and swindling and fancy hotels and a lavish lifestyle。 And I didn't see the ending coming from a mile away, maybe just 50 feet。 What a fun read! Lifting heavily from the headlines of the Anna Delvey trial and history, Cover Story tells the tale of a young woman who is smart enough to receive an internship at a fashion magazine but apparently not smart enough to detect that she is being used by a penniless pretend heiress。 I had mixed feelings about this book。 I read My Friend Anna when it first came out, long before the Netflix series or trial, and I feel a little partial to Williams。 While this book had a gigantic whopper of a twist (th Lifting heavily from the headlines of the Anna Delvey trial and history, Cover Story tells the tale of a young woman who is smart enough to receive an internship at a fashion magazine but apparently not smart enough to detect that she is being used by a penniless pretend heiress。 I had mixed feelings about this book。 I read My Friend Anna when it first came out, long before the Netflix series or trial, and I feel a little partial to Williams。 While this book had a gigantic whopper of a twist (that the rest of the book community seems to rave over), it wasn’t enough to convince me this was a new or interesting story from My Friend Anna。 My recommendation is to read that instead。 。。。more

3。5 stars rounded up to 4。 I didn't love this as much as everyone else。 Loved the format of emails, diary entries, Slack messages, etc。 But it wasn't until I was about 1/4 in before I got interested。 That ending。 I need to talk to someone about it!!! 3。5 stars rounded up to 4。 I didn't love this as much as everyone else。 Loved the format of emails, diary entries, Slack messages, etc。 But it wasn't until I was about 1/4 in before I got interested。 That ending。 I need to talk to someone about it!!! 。。。more

Listened to audio。 Quite possibly top book of 2022。 What a crazy, fast paced book, with an ending that shocked me! Inventing Anna vibes, but so much more than that。 Pick this up immediately!
